Is God Punishing Sharon?

According to televangelist Pat Robertson he is. According to a CBS news report Robertson claims that Ariel Sharon is being punished by God for dividing Israel. While I'm in no position to divine the intentions of the Almighty, I do find it rather curious that the only viable candidate for the conservative party to fill the power vacuum left by Sharon's tragic illness is Benjamin Netanyahu.

The former Prime Minister was known for his hard handed dealings with the Islamofascists at his border and would never have made the concessions that Sharon made. Israel has indeed been divided, but in the end are they any safer? Has placating the enemy made a difference in the peace and "stability of the region" as the media proudly proclaimed it would? Make no mistake Israel, like the United States, has her doves. Doves that would seek to sell out their brothers and sisters for the sake of some utopian pipe-dream of peace in a region where there can be no peace. All one has to do is look back at the heart wrenching images of last year when the IDF was forced to pry their fellow countrymen from their homes, turning their lives inside-out.

I believe that like Esther of the Old Testament, Netanyahu and those like him were "born for such a time as this." While my prayers will be with Israel and her prime minister, I believe that this tragic event presents an historic opportunity for the nation of Israel to return to a foreign policy that projects a position of strength.
